The Engineering of Endurance: Solving the Abrasive Challenge in Dry Bulk Handling

Delta Ducon logo with industrial equipment

In industrial sectors where materials behave like liquid sandpaper, the difference between a profitable operation and a maintenance nightmare lies in the specific engineering of the conveying system. For over 100 years, Delta Ducon has occupied the "Extreme Duty" niche, providing high-performance products for the mining, minerals, cement, and power industries. When standard industrial equipment fails in weeks, our systems are just getting started.

Beyond Standard Handling: The Delta Ducon Pedigree

Based in Malvern, PA, Delta Ducon has built a century of "industry know-how". We specialize in materials that are abrasive, severe, or otherwise difficult to manage. Our global headquarters serves as a hub for warehouse and assembly, supported by additional manufacturing facilities across Pennsylvania and a new Canadian sales office to serve the North American market.

The Technical Pillars of Abrasive Transport

To achieve a leadership position in abrasive handling, a system must master the physics of three distinct pneumatic transport modes:

1. Mastering the Three Phases of Conveying

Delta Ducon provides solutions "from dilute to dense phase and everything in between":

  • Dilute (Lean) Phase: Utilizes low pressure (3-15 psig) and high velocity (2800+ fpm). It is economically ideal for applications with few pickup points and multiple destinations.

  • Dual Phase (Semi-Dense): Operates at medium pressure (15-30 psig) and velocity (1800-2800 fpm), offering a balanced approach for moderately abrasive materials.

  • Dense Phase: The gold standard for high-capacity, long-distance transport. By utilizing high pressure (30-100 psig) and low velocity (600-1800 fpm), it minimizes material degradation and equipment wear.

2. Components Engineered for "Extreme Duty"

Standard components cannot survive the constant friction of limestone, clinker, or ores. We have engineered a proprietary line of hardware to meet these challenges:

  • Extreme Duty Rotary Valves: These valves feature fully adjustable and replaceable rotors and wear shoes cast in P-33 Alloy. This high nickel-chrome alloy boasts a hardness of over 550 BHN, significantly outperforming standard stainless steel or grey cast iron.

  • PERMA/flo Pipe & Elbows: Our abrasion-resistant components are cast solid—not just surface hardened—ensuring that protection does not "wear off" over time. Available in sizes from 2” to 12”, these fittings are designed for easy installation and long-lasting performance.

  • KG Diverter Valves: Constructed with 400+ BHN P-33 Alloy or induction-hardened steel, these valves seamlessly redirect material flow while maintaining a critical seal on closed legs.

Conclusion: A Partner in Sustainability and Efficiency

As the industry moves toward Green Cement and Decarbonization, Delta Ducon’s innovation is keeping pace. Our systems are used in the production of alternative materials like ground recycled glass, reclaimed ash, and ceramics. By minimizing dust emissions and energy consumption, our pneumatic solutions help clients build a greener, more profitable future.

If you need to efficiently convey, load, or meter abrasive material, Delta Ducon has the century of expertise required to keep your operation flowing smoothly.
